Guardiola identifies the reasons behind Manchester City's defeat against Liverpool

2 December 2024

Manchester City's Spanish coach Pep Guardiola expressed his sadness and regret over his team's loss to host Liverpool by two goals to none, Sunday, in the 13th round of the English Premier League.

The loss greatly reduced Manchester City's chances of retaining the league title as they fell to fifth place and are now 11 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Guardiola explained in statements to Sky Sports after the Liverpool match that his team could not stop Liverpool at the beginning of the match due to their strong aggressive style, adding that Liverpool deserved the first goal.

He also attributed the loss to City's lack of speed in the middle and weakness in one-to-one duels.

He also thanked his players for their past achievements, in a subtle hint at the many titles they won together at City, as a response to the piling criticism which culminated in Anfield fans chanting "Guardiola is getting sacked in the morning".
