The drama of the last Merseyside derby.. A violent brawl and 4 red cards

13 February 2025

The final moments of the Merseyside derby between Everton and its neighbor Liverpool were filled with drama, after the two teams tied (2-2), on Wednesday evening, in the last Derby between them at "Goodison Park" stadium.

After the final whistle was blown for the match, which ended in an entertaining last minute 2-2 draw, a violent clash broke out between Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucouré. Everton fans celebrated hysterically in the stands, with some running onto the field to celebrate with the players, which required the intervention of security personnel.

The referee took a long time to confirmthe goal, after reverting to VAR technology, due to suspicion of offside, in addition to a foul against Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, before deciding the goal was valid and ending the match moments later.

Chaos erupted after Everton's Abdoulaye Doucouré celebrated in a provocative manner in front of Liverpool fans, which angered Liverpool's Curtis Jones, leading to a violent brawl between the players. Players from both teams intervened in the altercation, prompting referee Michael Oliver, who had already blown the final whistle, to show Jones and Doucoure red cards for their actions during the clash.

But the drama did not stop there, as Liverpool manager Arne Slot was also shown a red card for protesting the referee, capping off an unforgettable night at Goodison Park, which hosted its last Merseyside derby before Everton move to its new stadium next season.

Liverpool's assistant manager Sepke Hulshof was also sent off for his violent protest at the decision to award Everton a late equaliser.

Liverpool failed to record their 100th win over Everton in all competitions, having won against their rivals on 99 occasions throughout history.
