VIDEO: Mourinho accused of Racism in Turkey.. What's the story?

25 February 2025

Galatasaray accused Fenerbahce's Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho of making "racist statements" after the goalless draw between the two arch-rivals on Monday, in the 25th round of the Turkish Football League. In a press conference after the final whistle, Jose Mourinho said that Galatasaray's members, who sat on the bench, were "jumping like monkeys" while objecting to the referee's decisions.

He also reportedly repeated his criticism of the Turkish referees who were absent from this sensitive confrontation between the two rivals, which was managed by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic, after the two clubs requested a foreign crew, according to what was circulated.

In its statement, Galatasaray announced that it would initiate criminal proceedings against the 62-year-old Portuguese coach, saying: "Since the beginning of his administrative duties in Turkey, Fenerbahce coach Jose Mourinho has continuously made insulting statements directed at the Turkish people."

"Today, his comments have escalated from mere immoral comments to unequivocally inhumane rhetoric. We therefore formally announce our intention to initiate criminal proceedings regarding the racist comments made by Mourinho. Accordingly, we will lodge formal complaints with UEFA and FIFA."

There was no immediate comment from Fenerbahce, who are second in the league, six points behind leaders Galatasaray.

Mourinho took over at Fenerbahce last summer, after three seasons with Roma, during which he led the capital club to the 2022 Conference League title, adding to his trophy cabinet.
