Chris Wood delivered a stunning hat-trick as New Zealand thrashed Fiji 7-0 on Friday, moving within one victory of securing their place at the FIFA World Cup for the third time.
The All Whites will face New Caledonia in the final of Oceania qualifying in Auckland on Monday, after the Pacific islanders eased past Tahiti 3-0 in the earlier semifinal at Wellington Regional Stadium.
Having missed out on the last three World Cups due to intercontinental playoff defeats, New Zealand now have a golden opportunity with Oceania receiving a direct berth for the first time. A victory over New Caledonia would confirm their return to football’s grandest stage for the first time since South Africa 2010.
With captain Wood in top form and world No. 152 New Caledonia primarily composed of amateur players, the All Whites are strong favorites heading into the clash at Eden Park.
"We know how good New Caledonia are, and we have to be ready for them," said Wood, recalling their 7-1 triumph over the same opposition in a 2022 World Cup qualifier.
"They put in a great performance today, and we know they'll cause us problems. Our focus now is on recovery and being ready for Monday."
The Nottingham Forest forward netted his second consecutive World Cup qualifying hat-trick, having scored three against Samoa in an 8-0 win last November.
Against Fiji, Wood opened the scoring in the sixth minute, heading home a precise cross from Sarpreet Singh. He then struck twice in quick succession before the hour mark, sealing his treble within a five-minute burst.
Substituted to a standing ovation from the 21,000-strong crowd, Wood later joined fans in the stands as the match continued.
Defender Tim Payne found the net for the first time in 12 years, making it 4-0 in the 33rd minute. Singh had earlier scored, while an own goal from Fiji compounded their misery. Kosta Barbarouses, who replaced Wood, rounded off the rout with a well-taken volley in the 73rd minute.
Earlier, New Caledonia secured their spot in the final with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Tahiti, led by a brace from their 36-year-old talisman Georges Gope-Fenepej.
The former Ligue 1 forward showcased his class, chipping goalkeeper Teave Teamotuaitau twice in the second half. His first came in the 50th minute, pouncing on a rebound from César Zeoula’s shot.
In a moment of brilliance, Gope-Fenepej spotted Teamotuaitau off his line and struck a sublime 35-metre left-footed shot in the 75th minute, doubling the lead.
Substitute Lues Waya added the final touch in stoppage time, weaving past two defenders before smashing a low drive inside the near post.
New Caledonia coach Johann Sidaner was thrilled with his team’s display.
"We are absolutely delighted with how the squad has come together," he said. "As football fans, seeing someone like Georges perform like that was truly special."
With just one match standing between New Zealand and a return to the World Cup, all eyes will be on Eden Park on Monday as they aim to secure their long-awaited qualification.
