Chelsea will be required to pay Manchester United a £5m fee if they choose not to make Jadon Sancho’s move permanent this summer.
The 24-year-old winger joined Chelsea on a season-long loan last August, with the agreement including an obligation to buy for a fee between £20m and £25m—provided the club finishes at least 14th in the Premier League. With nine games remaining, Chelsea currently sit fourth in the table.
However, as initially reported by The Athletic and now confirmed by sources familiar with the deal, a clause allows Chelsea to return Sancho to United if they pay a £5m compensation fee.
While Chelsea have publicly stated they are not considering activating this clause, uncertainty remains over Sancho’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
Sancho rejoined Borussia Dortmund on loan for the second half of last season following a fallout with former United manager Erik ten Hag, who publicly criticized his training performances.
United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently referenced Sancho in an interview with BBC Sport’s Dan Roan, highlighting the financial implications of his transfer.
"For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea, and for whom we pay half his wages, we are paying £17m to buy him in the summer," Ratcliffe stated, referring to the outstanding payments from Sancho’s £73m move from Dortmund in 2021.
Despite making a promising start at Chelsea, Sancho’s form has declined. Since scoring his second goal of the season against Tottenham on December 8, he has provided just one assist in 18 appearances.
Chelsea are actively looking to bolster their attacking options in the summer, targeting a new winger and a striker. They have already secured a £42m deal for 17-year-old Sporting CP winger Geovany Quenda, with the transfer set to be completed in 2026.
Sancho’s current contract at United runs until 2026, though the club holds an option to extend it by a further year.
