Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is set to be sidelined for up to seven weeks after sustaining an ankle injury, manager Pep Guardiola confirmed ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Leicester City.
The 24-year-old Norwegian, who has netted 21 goals in 28 league appearances this season, suffered the setback during City’s FA Cup quarterfinal victory over Bournemouth at the weekend.
“Sometimes there are seasons where these things happen repeatedly,” Guardiola told reporters on Tuesday. “It has been like this all season. If it were the end of the campaign before the Club World Cup, perhaps things would be different."
“With all the injuries we’ve had this season, I feel sorry for the players and for Erling as well. I wish him a speedy recovery so he can return as soon as possible.”
City’s medical team has estimated Haaland’s recovery period at five to seven weeks. “Hopefully, he will be fit by the end of the season and ready for the Club World Cup,” Guardiola added.
The Club World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 14 to July 13.
