Chelsea edged past London rivals Tottenham Hotspur with a 1-0 victory on Thursday, courtesy of a decisive header from Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández. The win bolstered Chelsea’s Champions League aspirations, lifting them back into fourth place in the Premier League standings.
Fernández found himself unmarked in the 50th minute and capitalized on a pinpoint cross from Cole Palmer—who returned from a brief injury spell—powering his header past the Spurs defense. The match was watched by England head coach Thomas Tuchel from the stands at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea briefly thought they had doubled their lead when Moisés Caicedo struck a brilliant volley, only for VAR to disallow the goal due to an offside in the buildup.
Tottenham then had a potential equalizer overturned as well, when substitute Pape Sarr’s 69th-minute long-range effort was ruled out following a VAR review, which identified a foul in the build-up by the Senegalese midfielder.
The result sees Chelsea reclaim fourth place, one point ahead of Manchester City in fifth and two points clear of sixth-placed Newcastle United—while still holding a game in hand—intensifying the race for Champions League qualification.
Tottenham’s dismal record at Stamford Bridge continued, with just one league win in their last 40 attempts. Sitting in 14th place, their hopes of securing European football next season now hinge on their success in the Europa League.
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca displayed his relief at the final whistle, roaring in celebration and embracing his coaching staff after a much-needed victory following their lackluster 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in their previous league outing.
Despite a lackluster attacking display in the first half—failing to register a single shot on target for the second consecutive match—Spurs nearly salvaged a point in the 89th minute. However, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez produced a stunning save to deny Son Heung-min at the far post.
The frustration among Spurs fans was palpable, with chants directed at the club’s ownership and head coach Ange Postecoglou. The Australian manager appeared to mock their protests, cupping his hand to his ear when Sarr seemingly brought Spurs level.
When asked about the fans' reaction to his substitutions, Postecoglou told Talksport: “It’s not the first time. Fans, I guess, express their opinions. That’s fine, and I have to accept it.”
Reflecting on the hard-fought victory, Chelsea defender Levi Colwill emphasized the team’s determination.
"At the end of the day, we need to win games. We're fighting for the Champions League, and sometimes that means adapting our style," he told Sky Sports.
