Ivan Rakitic Announces Retirement, Closes Chapter on Distinguished Career

Ivan Rakitic, a pivotal figure in Croatia’s golden generation and a key contributor to Barcelona’s and Sevilla’s European successes, officially announced his retirement from professional football on Monday at the age of 37.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Rakitic reflected on the emotional journey that spanned over two decades and multiple major honours.

“Football, you gave me more than I ever dreamed of. You gave me friends, emotions, joy and tears. Now it's time to say goodbye. Because even if I walk away from you, I know you'll never walk away from me. Thank you, football. For everything.”

An Illustrious Career Across Europe

Rakitic began his senior career at Swiss side FC Basel before moving to the Bundesliga with Schalke 04, where he established himself as a technically gifted and intelligent midfielder. His rise continued in Spain, where he truly left his mark.

At Sevilla, Rakitic captained the side to a UEFA Europa League title in 2014 and later returned to win a second with the Andalusian club. However, it was at Barcelona where he enjoyed the most decorated spell of his career, playing a central role in the club’s 2014–15 treble—winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League.

A Centurion for Croatia

Internationally, Rakitic earned 106 caps for Croatia, forming a formidable midfield partnership with Luka Modric. His contributions were instrumental in Croatia’s historic run to the 2018 FIFA World Cup final, where they fell to France. That tournament cemented his legacy as one of the most influential Croatian players of his generation.

Final Seasons and Farewell

Rakitic’s final professional chapter included a brief stint in Saudi Arabia with Al Shabab, followed by a homecoming to Hajduk Split, where he concluded his career.

His retirement marks the end of an era for both Croatian football and the clubs he served with distinction. Widely respected for his leadership, versatility, and composure under pressure, Ivan Rakitic leaves behind a legacy defined by excellence at the highest levels of the game.
