Arsenal on Brink of Landing Sporting Striker Viktor Gyökeres in €70m Deal

Arsenal are nearing the completion of a major summer signing, with negotiations to secure Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP now at an advanced stage.

The Premier League side has been engaged in discussions with the Portuguese club for over a week, and sources close to the deal confirm that an agreement is imminent.

The latest offer from Arsenal is valued at approximately €70 million (£60 million), including performance-based add-ons.

Crucially, Gyökeres has already agreed personal terms on a five-year contract, meaning that once the remaining contractual details between the clubs are finalised, the transfer can be swiftly formalised.

Sporting director Andrea Berta has taken the lead in closing the deal, flying to Lisbon late last week to accelerate talks.

Arsenal's interest in Gyökeres intensified after efforts to sign RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško stalled, prompting the club to shift their attention to the prolific Swedish forward.

Gyökeres’ situation in Lisbon has added urgency to the deal.

Sporting president Frederico Varandas confirmed over the weekend that the striker is facing internal disciplinary action after failing to report for the start of pre-season training.

Gyökeres has not publicly addressed his absence, but the timing has fuelled speculation that a move is close.

“No one is above the interests of the club,” Varandas told Portuguese news agency Lusa, in a firm statement that reflects Sporting’s frustration with the player’s conduct.

The 27-year-old forward has enjoyed a meteoric rise since moving to Sporting from Coventry City.

In just two seasons in Portugal, Gyökeres has netted a staggering 97 goals in 102 appearances, playing a central role in back-to-back Primeira Liga titles.

His clinical finishing and physical presence have attracted interest from several top European clubs, but it appears Arsenal are now poised to secure his signature.

Gyökeres also previously had a spell in English football with Brighton & Hove Albion and Coventry, but it is in Portugal where he has emerged as one of Europe's most prolific goal-scorers.

Should the transfer go through as expected, Gyökeres will become Arsenal’s marquee signing of the summer, addressing a long-identified need for a dominant centre-forward as Mikel Arteta seeks to build on last season’s title push.
