Pape Matar Sarr scored a breathtaking goal from the halfway line as Tottenham edged out Arsenal 1-0 in the first-ever north London derby held outside the UK, played in front of a sellout crowd in Hong Kong on Thursday.
The decisive moment came just before halftime, when Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya — already looking unconvincing after twice being caught off his line on corner kicks — was punished for his positioning once again. Sarr dispossessed Myles Lewis-Skelly just inside the Arsenal half, spotted Raya well outside his area, and launched a stunning strike from 50 yards that sailed into the net.
While technically a pre-season friendly, the match had all the intensity of a full-blooded Premier League clash. Both teams played with purpose and passion, delivering crunching tackles and engaging in heated confrontations throughout. The fierce rivalry was on full display inside Hong Kong’s air-conditioned Kai Tak Stadium, where 49,975 fans packed the stands to witness a derby that was anything but friendly.
Arsenal started brightly and enjoyed more possession early on, but it was Spurs who created the better chances in the first half, striking the woodwork three times and justifying their lead at the interval.
The Gunners came out with purpose after the break, pressing high and pinning Tottenham back. But new Spurs boss Thomas Frank had his defence organized and compact, limiting Arsenal’s clear-cut opportunities.
Gabriel Martinelli squandered one of Arsenal’s best chances in the 58th minute, blasting over the bar from inside the box. Substitutes Leandro Trossard and new signing Martin Zubimendi were introduced to inject fresh energy, with the latter nearly scoring moments after coming on, only for his shot to be deflected over.
Tottenham fans erupted in the 75th minute when Son Heung-min made his long-awaited entrance, followed by another loud ovation when Arsenal’s $67 million signing Viktor Gyokeres came on to make his debut wearing the iconic number 14 shirt once worn by Thierry Henry.
Gyokeres showed glimpses of his pace and movement, but couldn't find the breakthrough as Arsenal pushed for a late equaliser.
Tottenham now head to South Korea for their next friendly against Newcastle United, while Arsenal wrap up their Asian tour after stops in Singapore and Hong Kong.
