Liverpool Football Club and its fans commemorated the passing of Portuguese star Diogo Jota in the team's first appearance at Anfield since his passing. Jota passed away in a tragic car accident in Spain in early July, at the age of 28, along with his brother, André Silva (25).
The incident was a major shock within Liverpool and among its fans around the world.
During the friendly match against Athletic Bilbao on Monday, the referee stopped play in the 20th minute—Jota's shirt number—to pave the way for a collective tribute from the players, coaching staff, and fans, who applauded enthusiastically in honor of the late star. An official tribute ceremony preceded the match, with Liverpool legend Phil Thompson and Bilbao president John Uriarte laying wreaths on the pitch.
A message was also written on the billboards around Anfield: "Rest in peace, Jota and André Silva - you'll never walk alone."
The fans, in turn, sang Jota's name throughout the match, in moments of sadness, pride, and love.
Jota's tributes are expected to continue during Liverpool's upcoming matches, as the team faces Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, followed by Bournemouth in the Premier League opener on August 15.
