Rashford debuts as Barcelona edge past nine-man Mallorca

Barcelona began their La Liga title defence with a heated 3–0 win away at Mallorca, in a match marked by controversy and two red cards for the hosts.

The champions struck first when Raphinha met a Lamine Yamal cross with a well-placed header.

Their second came in chaotic fashion, as Ferran Torres scored while Mallorca captain Antonio Raíllo was still on the ground after taking a blow to the head.

The protests that followed only worsened Mallorca’s situation — Manu Morlanes was dismissed shortly afterwards for a second booking.

Things unravelled further when Vedat Muriqi caught debutant goalkeeper Joan García with a high boot.

Initially cautioned, the striker saw his yellow upgraded to red following a VAR review, leaving Mallorca with nine players.

Barcelona struggled to make their advantage count until stoppage time, when the lively Yamal hammered home a third goal to settle the contest.

Marcus Rashford made his long-awaited debut, replacing Ferran Torres in the 69th minute.

The England forward, joining on loan from Manchester United, became the first English player to appear for Barça since Gary Lineker in 1989.

Playing through the middle, he was unable to create a scoring chance but added energy in the final stages.

Both Rashford and García were only officially registered on matchday morning due to Barcelona’s financial restrictions, underlining the off-field challenges still shadowing the club.
