Liverpool began their Premier League title defense with a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday, kicking off the new season. The pre-match tributes to the late star Diogo Jota and his brother were paid tribute by Liverpool and Bournemouth players, coaching staff, and fans in a wonderful gesture.
Frenchman Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring in the 37th minute, before Cody Gakpo doubled the lead early in the second half in the 49th minute. Bournemouth came roaring back through Antoine Semenyo, who reduced the deficit in the 64th minute and then equalized in the 74th minute.
In the crunch moments, Liverpool regained their balance, with Federico Chiesa scoring in the 89th minute, before Mohamed Salah added his usual fourth goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to secure the three points and give the Anfield crowd a perfect start.
Mohamed Salah got into an altercation with a Bournemouth player in the 52nd minute after the defender attempted to prevent the Egyptian from standing in front of the visiting goal during a Liverpool corner kick, leading to tension between the two players and the referee's intervention.
With this victory, Liverpool earned their first three points of the new season, while Bournemouth left empty-handed despite their impressive performance.
