Rangers’ Champions League hopes hang by a thread after a damaging 3-1 defeat to Club Brugge in the first leg of their play-off at Ibrox.
The Scottish side were punished for defensive lapses early on, with Romeo Vermant capitalising on a mix-up to score from distance before Jorne Spileers added a second from a corner inside seven minutes. The atmosphere deteriorated further when Brandon Mechele drove in a third midway through the first half, leaving the home crowd stunned.
Danilo’s strike shortly after the restart gave Rangers a lifeline, but Philippe Clement’s side face a daunting challenge in next week’s return leg in Belgium, needing at least a two-goal swing to avoid elimination.
Elsewhere in the play-offs, Qarabag secured a commanding 3-1 away win over Ferencvaros in Hungary, while Cypriot side Pafos claimed a notable 2-1 victory at Red Star Belgrade.
