Manchester City secure Donnarumma as successor to Ederson

Manchester City have announced the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth around €35 million (£30m), with the Italian international agreeing a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium.

The 26-year-old arrives as a direct replacement for Ederson, who has departed for Fenerbahce after eight highly successful years in Manchester. Donnarumma joins fresh from helping PSG to last season’s Champions League triumph, while also carrying the pedigree of being Italy’s starting goalkeeper during their Euro 2020 victory.

His exclusion from PSG’s recent Super Cup squad underlined a shift in the club’s hierarchy, paving the way for his move to England.

“For me, signing with Manchester City is a very proud moment,” Donnarumma said. “This is a team filled with world-class players and led by one of the greatest managers of all time in Pep Guardiola. Every footballer dreams of representing a club like this.”

City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, described the move as a major acquisition for the reigning Premier League champions. “Gianluigi’s reputation and record at the highest level speak volumes,” Viana said. “He has vast experience of competing for major honours and brings both quality and leadership to our squad.”

The transfer represents a significant reshaping of City’s goalkeeping department. Donnarumma’s shot-stopping ability, command of the penalty area, and experience on the biggest stages are expected to provide continuity at the elite level, while also giving Guardiola a goalkeeper who fits into the club’s long-term planning.
