UEFA has suspended Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone for one match for unsporting behavior during his team's match against Liverpool in the first round of the Champions League. The decision came after Simeone was sent off in the match at Anfield on September 17, which Atletico Madrid lost 3-2.
The Argentine coach engaged in a verbal altercation with Liverpool fans after Virgil van Dijk scored the winning goal for the Reds in stoppage time. UEFA announced on Tuesday that the sanction will be implemented immediately, meaning Simeone will miss Atletico's match against Eintracht Frankfurt, scheduled for Tuesday evening.
UEFA also fined Liverpool €4,000 for the throwing of objects by its fans during the match against Atletico.
