Scotland produced a resilient second-half display to secure a 3-1 victory over Greece in Thursday’s World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park, maintaining their unbeaten run in Group C and edging closer to a first World Cup appearance since 1998. The result also marked a personal milestone for head coach Steve Clarke, who equalled Craig Brown's national record of 71 matches in charge.
Despite a sluggish first-half performance in which Scotland failed to register a single shot on target, the hosts grew into the contest after the interval. Greece dominated early possession and created the better opportunities, yet lacked a clinical edge in front of goal. Vangelos Pavlidis spurned a golden chance in the eighth minute when he failed to connect at the far post, while Georgios Masouras also fired over from close range early in the second half.
Greece eventually converted their pressure into a breakthrough when Liverpool full-back Kostas Tsimikas struck in the 62nd minute, rewarding the visitors for their control of the game. However, their lead was short-lived. Just two minutes later, Ryan Christie ignited the Hampden crowd with a sharp finish from inside the area, a goal confirmed following a brief VAR review.
The momentum swung decisively in Scotland’s favour. In the 80th minute, Lewis Ferguson capitalised on a defensive scramble to claim his first senior international goal – an unpolished strike, but a crucial one. Deep into stoppage time, Lyndon Dykes sealed the victory, pouncing on a costly misjudgment by Greek goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis to make it 3-1 and complete the comeback.
The result extends Scotland’s unbeaten run under Clarke in this qualifying campaign and keeps them level with group leaders Denmark on seven points after three matches. Greece, meanwhile, remain on three points and now face an uphill battle to avoid elimination, with a decisive away fixture against Denmark looming on Sunday.
Clarke will surpass Brown’s managerial appearance record when Scotland host Belarus next, as his side continue their push toward qualification on the back of a growing sense of belief and resilience.
