Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that Lionel Messi has rejoined the national squad and could feature in Tuesday’s international friendly against Puerto Rico in Fort Lauderdale.
Messi did not take part in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Venezuela last week, instead featuring for Inter Miami over the weekend, where he scored twice in a 4-0 MLS victory against Atlanta United. Despite the quick turnaround between club and international fixtures, Scaloni says the 38-year-old forward is available for selection, pending final fitness checks.
“I saw Messi play on Saturday and from what I understand he finished the match well,” Scaloni told reporters on Monday. “I haven’t spoken to him yet, but we have our final training session before the game. As always, I will talk to him and if he feels ready, he will play.”
Tuesday’s match will be held at Chase Stadium, home of Inter Miami, after it was relocated from Chicago due to security and logistical concerns. The fixture is expected to draw a strong local crowd, given Messi’s presence and popularity in South Florida.
Argentina, the reigning world champions, are using the friendly as part of their preparations ahead of upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
