Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised Viktor Gyökeres after the Swedish striker ended his nine-game goal drought with two goals in the 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
Signed from Sporting CP for £64 million, Gyökeres has faced growing scrutiny over his lack of goals this season. But the 27-year-old responded emphatically, scoring Arsenal’s third and fourth goals to seal a convincing Champions League victory.
The forward was visibly relieved as he left the pitch late in the match to a warm ovation from the Emirates crowd — recognition that Arteta said was fully deserved.
“He deserved that moment,” Arteta said. “Everything we’ve seen from him in recent weeks — his effort, his work rate, the way he’s helped the team — has been outstanding. There was never any doubt about his contribution, even without the goals. It was just about keeping his confidence and emotional balance so he could play freely. You could see how happy his teammates were for him — that tells you everything.”
Gyökeres’ first goal came through a bit of fortune, as his weak shot deflected into the net. His second, however, was more clinical — reacting quickly to head home after Gabriel flicked on a corner.
“He makes us a much better team,” Arteta added. “His physical presence, pressing, and hold-up play are phenomenal. He’s made us more unpredictable. He scored two very different goals today, and hopefully this gives him the momentum to go on a good run.”
The brace takes Gyökeres’ tally to five goals for the season, including three in the Premier League, and the striker admitted he was pleased to finally be back among the goals.
“It’s great for the team — and of course, for me as well,” Gyökeres said. “I always give my best, work hard, and try to contribute in different ways. The goals were going to come sooner or later, and I’m happy they did tonight.”
