Kane Can’t Stop Scoring – Is the Ballon d’Or Finally Within Reach?

After more than a decade of near-misses and individual brilliance, Harry Kane finally lifted his first major trophy earlier this year — the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich, ending a 15-year wait for silverware.

Now, the England captain has his sights set even higher: Champions League glory, a World Cup triumph, and football’s ultimate individual honour — the Ballon d’Or.

Despite being in the most prolific form of his career, Kane ranked only 13th in the 2025 Ballon d’Or standings, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé claiming the award. Yet, in the month since, the 32-year-old appears to have elevated his game to previously unseen heights.

Following his two goals in Bayern’s 4-0 Champions League win over Club Brugge, Kane’s tally now stands at 20 goals in just 12 appearances across all competitions.

He knows exactly what it would take to make history.

“I’d love to win it, for sure,” Kane said earlier this month. “It would be the result of doing something special, individually and as a team — almost the perfect season.”

No English player has lifted the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001, with only Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, and Kevin Keegan (twice) having done so before. Kane could become the fifth — if his record-breaking form continues.

Numbers That Define a Phenomenon

If there was ever a moment for Kane to claim football’s most coveted individual honour, it’s now.

In September, he became the fastest player this century to reach 100 goals for a club in one of Europe’s top five leagues, achieving the milestone in just 104 matches. He has now scored 105 goals in 108 games for Bayern — an output unmatched by any other player in Europe since the start of the 2023–24 season.

Even Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo did not reach 20 goals in a season as quickly — needing 17 and 13 matches respectively — while Kane averages a goal every 54 minutes.

With 12 goals in seven Bundesliga appearances this season, he’s on pace to reach 58 goals, potentially surpassing Robert Lewandowski’s record 41-goal Bundesliga campaign.

His dominance extends to Europe: since making his Champions League debut for Bayern in September 2023, Kane has recorded 24 goals and six assists — the most direct goal involvements of any player in the competition during that span. Only Ruud van Nistelrooy scored more in his first 60 Champions League games (48).

Redefining the Modern Striker

But Kane’s claim to the Ballon d’Or is not built on goals alone. His positional intelligence, passing range, and selfless link-up play have transformed the traditional centre-forward role.

“Kane has reinvented the centre-forward game, just as Manuel Neuer redefined goalkeeping 15 years ago,” wrote Lothar Matthäus, the 1990 Ballon d’Or winner, in Sky Germany.

“He’s not just a goalscorer. He’s a creator, a playmaker, even a tackler. I don’t see a more complete striker in world football right now.”

Former teammate Kingsley Coman echoed that sentiment:

“Harry makes you better — he’s not just here to finish chances, he creates them. He enjoys providing a perfect pass as much as scoring. He’s the easiest striker I’ve ever played with.”

Following Jamal Musiala’s long-term injury in the summer, manager Vincent Kompany granted Kane almost total attacking freedom — a tactical decision that has paid dividends.

“He’s playing like three or four players at once,” said Raphael Honigstein on the BBC Football Daily Euro Leagues podcast.

“His football IQ and willingness to sacrifice for the team are on another level,” added Mina Rzouki.

The Challenge From Haaland and Mbappé

Kane is not alone in the race for the next Ballon d’Or.

Erling Haaland has already scored 24 goals in 14 games for Manchester City and Norway this season, while Kylian Mbappé has 18 in 14 for Real Madrid and France. Including his England goals, Kane sits just ahead with 23 in 15 matches.

Haaland’s 12-game scoring streak and Mbappé’s dazzling consistency make them formidable rivals, but Matthäus believes Kane’s all-round influence sets him apart.

“I’ve never seen Haaland or Mbappé slide-tackle in their own penalty area like Kane did against Dortmund,” he said. “Nor do they play 50-metre passes or delicate chips like he can.”

The Road to the Ballon d’Or

In modern football, the Ballon d’Or tends to follow success at the highest level — Champions League, Euros, or World Cup. Even Kane admits it’s often a reflection of team triumphs:

“It’s a team trophy that the best individual from that team wins,” he said. “But if I keep performing and we win major titles with club and country, I’ll have a real chance.”

With Bayern Munich unbeaten in Europe and England cruising into the 2026 World Cup after six consecutive qualifying wins, the foundations are set.

For Kane, this season could represent more than goals — it could be the year he redefines English football’s modern legacy and finally earns the global recognition his career has long deserved.

A “perfect season” may no longer be just a dream — it’s a very real possibility.
