Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany insists the club’s congested fixture list will not distract the German champions as they prepare to face Bayer Leverkusen in a top-of-the-table Bundesliga clash on Saturday.
The Bavarians are in the midst of a demanding run — three matches in seven days — but remain focused on maintaining their flawless start to the season. Bayern have won 14 out of 14 matches across all competitions, a record-breaking start for any club in Europe’s top five leagues, following their 4-1 German Cup victory over Cologne in midweek.
“For me, this is a top match,” Kompany told reporters on Friday. “There’s still a bit of rivalry from the past two seasons.”
Leverkusen, who were unbeaten champions in 2024 and runners-up to Bayern last season, continue to show impressive form under new manager Kasper Hjulmand. They sit fifth in the table on 17 points, seven behind leaders Bayern, and are currently on a 37-match unbeaten run away from home in the league.
“I’m not here to decide who our main title rivals are,” Kompany added. “The only thing that matters is winning tomorrow. The rivalry is still alive, and we can’t underestimate them given what they’ve achieved recently.”
Leverkusen’s resurgence has been remarkable, with four consecutive league victories since Hjulmand replaced Erik ten Hag after just two games of the new campaign. Despite selling several key players — including Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong — they have successfully rebuilt with a crop of new talent.
Kompany, however, remains unconcerned by the packed calendar. “There’s no such thing as a tough phase for us. Three games in six or seven days — that’s normal for Bayern Munich. We don’t change our goals just because the schedule is busy,” he said.
Bayern’s current streak of 14 straight wins has already surpassed AC Milan’s 13-match record set during the 1992-93 season.
“Leverkusen have collected 16 of a possible 18 points under their new coach,” Kompany noted. “They’re in excellent form again, very dangerous in attack. They lost a lot of talent, but they’ve also brought in plenty of quality.”
