Switzerland Secure World Cup Qualification Despite Kosovo’s Second-Half Surge

Switzerland clinched their place at next year’s World Cup after a 1–1 draw with Kosovo on Tuesday, with Florent Muslija’s outstanding equaliser cancelling out Ruben Vargas’ early second-half opener.

The result confirmed Switzerland as Group B winners on 14 points, completing an unbeaten qualifying campaign. Kosovo’s resilient performance earned them second place with 11 points and a spot in March’s European playoffs as they continue their pursuit of a first-ever World Cup appearance.

“We didn’t play badly, but we knew they needed six goals to overtake us on goal difference. And it’s not easy to play against us,” Swiss defender Ricardo Rodriguez told SRF Sport.

Switzerland Control Early Phases

In a cautious first half, Switzerland created the clearer openings. Michel Aebischer forced a strong save from Arijanet Muric within six minutes, one of the few notable chances in an otherwise tight opening period.

Kosovo struggled to build sustained pressure but nearly made a breakthrough on the stroke of halftime when Fisnik Asllani unleashed a powerful effort from the edge of the area, only for a Swiss defender to produce a crucial block.

Second Half Sparks to Life

Switzerland broke the deadlock just 90 seconds into the second half. Vargas timed his run perfectly to latch onto a through ball from Djibril Sow, finishing low past Muric to give the visitors a deserved lead.

The Swiss soon threatened a second when Johan Manzambi dribbled past two defenders and aimed for the bottom corner, but Muric reacted decisively to keep the deficit to one.

Muslija’s Moment of Quality

Kosovo equalised in the 74th minute through a moment of individual brilliance. Muslija capitalised on a loose ball outside the penalty area and curled a superb shot into the top-right corner, leaving Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with no chance.

The goal lifted the atmosphere inside Pristina City Stadium, energising Kosovo for a late push. Baton Zabergja and Vedat Muriqi both came close to finding the winner, but Kobel and a disciplined Swiss defence held firm under pressure.

Consistency the Foundation of Swiss Success

Reflecting on the result, Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka highlighted the significance of the team’s sustained success.

“It was important for us that the Kosovars didn’t bring their euphoria into the game,” he said. “We can be proud of ourselves. It’s not something to take for granted that we’ve qualified for a major tournament eight times in a row. I’m just happy.”

Switzerland now advance to the 2026 World Cup, continuing a remarkable era of consistency on the international stage, while Kosovo prepare for a crucial playoff campaign that could bring them closer than ever to a World Cup debut.
