Barnes Brace Stuns Man City as Newcastle Claim Win

Harvey Barnes produced a heroic performance at St James’ Park, scoring both goals as Newcastle United defeated Manchester City in a breathless Premier League clash.

Barnes put Newcastle in front early on and later pounced inside the box to fire home the decisive strike, sealing a memorable victory and sending the home crowd into chaos.

City had briefly pulled level when Ruben Dias’ effort deflected off Fabian Schar and wrong-footed the defence after Newcastle failed to clear a corner.

But the hosts responded instantly.

Jacob Murphy’s cross caused havoc, Bruno Guimaraes’ header crashed off the bar, and Barnes reacted quickest to hook in the rebound.

A long VAR check for offside followed, but the goal stood - triggering another eruption around St James’ Park.

The win was the perfect response for Eddie Howe’s side after their 3–1 defeat to Brentford before the international break, and a rare triumph over Pep Guardiola’s City.

Newcastle Rise to the Occasion

For much of the first half, City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma kept Newcastle at bay with a string of key saves, particularly against Nick Woltemade.

But once Barnes broke through, the momentum shifted.

Newcastle’s energy, physicality and resilience were evident throughout, with Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento surging forward and Malick Thiaw standing firm against Erling Haaland.

Barnes could easily have crumbled after missing gilt-edged chances earlier in the game, including a glaring effort at the back post - but instead he came out stronger.

His crisp opener from distance and composed second-half finish captured Newcastle’s spirit as they protected a lead they might previously have surrendered.

As he left the pitch late on, St James’ Park rose to applaud him - with supporters gleefully chanting his name.

City Left Ruing Missed Chances

This was a frustrating night for Manchester City, who failed to capitalise on their chances and missed an opportunity to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal.

Haaland, chasing his 100th Premier League goal, endured a rare off night.

He was denied by Nick Pope when clean through, dragged a chip wide after being played in by Jeremy Doku, and saw another effort saved at close range.

It marked only his third goalless league outing of the season.

Phil Foden also spurned a major opportunity and was furious when a penalty appeal against Schar was waved away.

City’s mood worsened when VAR took nearly five minutes to confirm Newcastle’s winner, with replays eventually showing Guimaraes was onside.

The defeat leaves City third in the table and wondering how they let the game slip.
