Steven Gerrard insists Liverpool are not in “crisis,” but admits Arne Slot must quickly stop the rot after the Reds suffered a bruising 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.
The loss marked Liverpool’s ninth defeat in their last 12 matches across all competitions — their worst run of form since the 1953-54 season — and their third straight game losing by three goals. Slot, who guided Liverpool to the Premier League title just three months ago, now finds his side sitting 12th in the league and 13th in their Champions League group.
Despite the alarming downturn, Gerrard believes the situation has not yet tipped into full-blown crisis.
“Crisis is a strong word, and disrespectful to some of the players who have delivered for this club, and for the manager who delivered three months ago,” the Liverpool icon told TNT Sports. “But you can’t deny the team is struggling massively. Confidence is at an all-time low and they just keep bleeding.”
Gerrard warned that unless Slot finds “answers and stability,” Liverpool’s slump will continue.
Former teammate Steve McManaman also urged patience, saying talk about Slot's future is premature.
“It’s far too early for such questions,” he said. “They’d have to go out of the Champions League and be wallowing at the bottom of the league. They play Arsenal in the second week of January — that’s when the question should be asked.”
Liverpool will look to halt their downward spiral when they face West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday.
