Sheffield Wednesday hit with additional points deduction as Chansiri handed three-year ban

Sheffield Wednesday have been dealt a further setback after the English Football League (EFL) imposed an additional six-point deduction for multiple regulatory breaches, leaving the club 27 points adrift of Championship safety.

Former owner Dejphon Chansiri has also been issued a three-year ban from owning or serving as a director of any EFL club.

According to BBC Radio Sheffield, the latest sanctions stem from the club’s repeated failures to pay players in March, May and June, alongside other missed payments to staff and HMRC. The penalty follows the 12-point deduction applied in October after the Owls entered administration.

As a result, Wednesday now sit on –10 points, well behind 21st-placed Swansea City.

Ongoing investigations but no further points planned

The EFL confirmed that while investigations into the club’s financial conduct during the current season are still ongoing, it is not pursuing any additional points deductions at this time.

In its official statement, the league said:

“Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL Regulations relating to payment obligations, with Mr Dejphon Chansiri prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL club for a period of three years.”

The EFL added that cases related to alleged breaches prior to administration in the 2025–26 season remain under review by the independent Club Financial Reporting Unit, but further sanctions are not expected.

Fee restriction appeal ongoing

Separately, discussions continue between the league and the club over Wednesday’s appeal against their fee-spending restriction, which is currently due to remain in place until the end of the winter 2027 transfer window. The matter is likely to be resolved as part of the club’s eventual exit from administration.

End of the Chansiri era

Chansiri, who led the Thai consortium that took charge in 2015, saw his decade-long ownership effectively brought to an end when the club entered administration.

Administrators are now assessing offers and aim to identify a preferred bidder to take control of the club, with expectations that a decision could be made by Friday.
