Forest Punish Vicario Mistakes to Sink Tottenham at City Ground

Tottenham endured a dismal afternoon at the City Ground as Nottingham Forest capitalised on a series of costly errors from goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to claim a deserved victory.

Vicario, already under scrutiny after a recent mistake against Fulham, was again at the centre of Spurs’ problems as Forest ran out convincing winners, with Callum Hudson-Odoi scoring twice and Ibrahim Sangaré adding a spectacular late third.

The result lifts Forest five points clear of the relegation places, while Tottenham remain stuck in mid-table.

Forest looked the sharper side from the opening exchanges and were unfortunate not to score earlier when Sangaré’s header struck the post, forcing Vicario into a save from Neco Williams’ follow-up.

However, the breakthrough soon arrived in dramatic fashion.

A loose pass from Vicario put teenage defender Archie Gray under pressure on the edge of his own area, allowing Sangaré to steal possession and square for Hudson-Odoi, who rolled the ball into an unguarded net after 28 minutes.

Tottenham showed little reaction and were punished again shortly after the restart.

A cross from the left drifted awkwardly across the box and over Vicario, with Hudson-Odoi arriving to finish and double Forest’s advantage.

Any faint hopes of a comeback were extinguished late on when Sangaré produced a moment of quality, unleashing a powerful strike from distance that crashed in off the post beyond the helpless goalkeeper.

The defeat ends Tottenham’s brief momentum following recent wins and leaves them in 11th place, while Forest continue to build breathing space at the bottom end of the table.

Nottingham Forest analysis: Signs of stability under Dyche

Forest’s response to recent setbacks suggests growing resilience under Sean Dyche.

Heavy defeats earlier in the season now appear isolated, with this commanding display following a long-awaited European away victory in midweek.

Although Vicario’s mistakes played a role, Forest’s pressing, energy and organisation were key factors in the win.

Since Dyche’s arrival in October, Forest have suffered only three defeats and have consistently responded positively each time.

While they remain far from safe, performances of this intensity indicate a side moving in the right direction after a turbulent start to the campaign.

Tottenham analysis: Regression raises fresh concerns

For Tottenham, this was another reminder of how fragile progress remains.

Just as Spurs appeared to be finding consistency, they delivered one of their poorest displays of the season.

Vicario’s errors were costly, but the problems ran deeper.

Forest’s aggressive press overwhelmed Spurs, who offered little creativity or threat in response.

Richarlison and Xavi Simons struggled to influence the game, while Forest’s goalkeeper was largely untested.

Thomas Frank may once again feel compelled to shield his goalkeeper, but the collective performance leaves serious questions about Spurs’ ability to move forward in their current form.
