Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Deportivo Alavés on Sunday evening in a matchday 16 fixture of the Spanish La Liga. The Royal Club opened the scoring in the 24th minute through their French star Kylian Mbappé, ending the first half with the visitors leading 1-0.
However, the home side came back strongly in the second half, equalizing in the 68th minute through Carlos Vicente.
The Brazilian Rodrygo then played the role of savior, scoring the decisive winning goal for Real Madrid in the 76th minute. This rescued the team from a draw that would have complicated their situation and eased the pressure on coach Xabi Alonso, who has been under increasing pressure after his team managed only one win in their last six matches, along with two losses and three draws. With this victory, Real Madrid moved up to second place in La Liga with 39 points, closing the gap with leaders Barcelona to just four points.
Meanwhile, Alavés remain in twelfth place with 18 points.
