Liverpool are bracing themselves for the possibility that Alexander Isak could face a spell on the sidelines after suffering a suspected serious lower-leg injury in Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Tottenham.
The Sweden international made an immediate impact off the bench by opening the scoring, but was caught by Micky van de Ven as he struck the ball and was unable to continue.
Isak was eventually withdrawn, raising concerns within the Liverpool camp.
The 26-year-old, who completed a British-record £125m move from Newcastle in September, underwent MRI scans on Sunday to assess the damage.
The results are expected to clarify the severity of the injury and how long he could be unavailable, with head coach Arne Slot set to address the issue at his press conference on Tuesday.
Speaking shortly after the match, Slot admitted his concern.
“We’ll have to wait and see,” he said.
“But when a player scores and then can’t try to return to the pitch, it’s usually not a good sign.”
Isak’s season has been disrupted since his arrival at Anfield.
He has managed just two league goals in 10 appearances and has yet to enjoy a consistent run of starts, partly due to fitness issues.
Earlier in the summer he missed Newcastle’s pre-season tour with what was described as a minor thigh problem, trained alone at Real Sociedad, and arrived at Liverpool without a full pre-season behind him.
Liverpool’s attacking resources are already stretched, with Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations and Cody Gakpo sidelined through injury.
Hugo Ekitike, who also scored against Spurs, is expected to continue leading the line.
The French forward has found form in recent weeks, scoring 11 times this season, including five goals in his last three league outings.
As Liverpool wait for clarity on Isak’s condition, Slot faces the prospect of navigating a crucial period with limited attacking options.
