Calvert-Lewin Stays Red-Hot as Leeds Fight Back against Sunderland

Dominic Calvert-Lewin extended his remarkable scoring run to six Premier League games as Leeds United recovered from a goal down to earn a deserved draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The England striker struck early in the second half, finishing off a superb team move in which every Leeds outfield player was involved.

The goal etched Calvert-Lewin into the club’s history books, making him the first Leeds player since John McCole in 1959-60 to score in six consecutive top-flight matches.

His composed finish cancelled out Simon Adingra’s first-half opener and stretched Leeds’ unbeaten run to five games, leaving them seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Leeds started brightly, dominating possession and threatening through Noah Okafor, but it was Sunderland who struck first on 28 minutes.

After Leeds failed to clear a long throw, Granit Xhaka picked out Adingra, who curled a fine effort beyond Lucas Perri from the edge of the area.

The goal sparked visible frustration on the Leeds touchline, with manager Daniel Farke unhappy at how his defence allowed Adingra space, just moments after the winger had caught Joe Rodon with a late challenge.

Rodon was later forced off, and Leeds almost levelled before the break when Brenden Aaronson’s low shot beat Robin Roefs, only for Trai Hume to clear off the line.

Sunderland finished the half strongly and should have doubled their lead.

Brian Brobbey squandered two clear chances, first seeing a tame finish cleared off the line and then glancing a header narrowly over the bar.

Those misses proved costly.

Two minutes into the second half, Calvert-Lewin struck, meeting Aaronson’s low cross to bring Leeds level and shift the momentum firmly in the visitors’ favour.

Leeds dominated the remainder of the match but could not find a winner against a resolute Sunderland side, who preserved their unbeaten home record this season.

The Black Cats remain seventh on 28 points, while Leeds sit 16th on 20, buoyed by their striker’s sparkling form and growing belief of Premier League survival.
