Second-Half Surge Sends Middlesbrough Back Into Promotion Places

Second-Half Surge Sends Middlesbrough Back Into Promotion Places

Middlesbrough powered back into the Championship’s top two with a ruthless second-half display, scoring four times in just 22 minutes to overwhelm a wasteful Southampton at the Riverside.

Morgan Whittaker led the charge with two goals, either side of a rare strike from Sam Silvera, before substitute Alan Browne completed the rout late on.

The emphatic win capitalised on Ipswich Town’s postponed trip to Portsmouth and cut the gap to leaders Coventry City to six points after the Sky Blues lost earlier in the day.

It was a timely boost for Kim Hellberg’s side, who claimed their first victory and first goals in five matches.

Southampton, by contrast, were left to reflect on another damaging defeat that extends their winless run to six games and leaves them languishing in 15th place.

Injuries again disrupted Boro early on, with Alex Bangura forced off inside the opening minutes, prompting another defensive reshuffle.

However, there was encouragement in the debut of French defender Adilson Malanda, recently signed from MLS side Charlotte, who made an immediate impact with a crucial block to deny Flynn Downes when Sol Brynn was beaten.

Southampton squandered several clear chances before the break.

Tom Fellows, still searching for his first goal since arriving from West Brom, fired over after being picked out by Finn Azaz.

Early in the second half, Adam Armstrong looked certain to score after a ricochet fell kindly for him, only for Malanda to intervene again with a decisive block.

Those missed opportunities proved costly. Middlesbrough struck with their first effort on target when a clever short corner saw Matt Targett slide a pass through for Whittaker to finish past Gavin Bazunu.

From that moment, the hosts took full control. Silvera doubled the lead by racing on to Luke Ayling’s long ball to claim his first Boro goal since February 2024.

Soon after, sloppy defending from Saints allowed Aidan Morris to tee up Whittaker for his second of the afternoon and his 10th of the season.

There was still time for Browne to mark his arrival in style, converting after Bazunu could only parry Hayden Hackney’s strike.

For Hellberg, it was a much-needed return to winning ways.

For Southampton boss Tonda Eckert, whose side have struggled since his appointment was made permanent last month, this heavy defeat underlined a season that continues to drift in the wrong direction.

'A well deserved win' - Boro reaction

Middlesbrough head coach Kim Hellberg told BBC Radio Tees:

"It was a well deserved win. It was a very good second half, a lot of goals and a message of belief and keep doing the things that we've done and that will give you results over time.

"You look at it and see that we haven't scored for seven hours or something like that and it goes another 45 minutes.

"But the intensity, how the players trained and worked every day at the training ground, how they are with each other and how they worked with their body language even in tough periods in terms of not getting results and the frustration of playing that type of football and not getting the wins or points from that, it shows the belief in the players in how they kept going."

Saints must be 'more resilient' - reaction

Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert told BBC Radio Solent:

"The game has two parts today. We can talk about a game to 55 minutes and the part after that and the second part is nowhere near good enough and not acceptable.

"We need to become more resilient as a group. We can be 2-0 up today, but not every game is going to go that way.

"We've had some games that went this way and it all looks very nice but there are some games that are just not there and we need to be more resilient.

"It is two weeks until we play our next league game, we need to stick our heads together and find solutions for that because in the second half of the season there are many points to play for, but as I keep saying, we need to be more resilient."
