The famous Congolese fan, Michel Nkoka Mbuladinga, experienced a dramatic end after his country's team lost to Algeria with a "killer" goal in the round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco. Mbuladinga had become a phenomenon no less captivating than the action on the pitch, having habitually stood throughout his national team's matches like a living statue, inspired by the iconic figure of Patrice Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo after its independence in 1960. Lumumba was assassinated less than a year later in tragic circumstances that became a symbol of struggle and national dignity.

Mbuladinga is nicknamed "Lumumba Via" due to his striking resemblance to the late leader.

During matches, he wears a yellow suit, red trousers, and a blue tie (the colors of the Congolese flag) and raises his right hand in a stern salute, perfectly mimicking the pose of the Lumumba statue in Kinshasa.

His body remains taut, his gaze fixed on the pitch with a focus more akin to devotion than observation, as if performing a sacred duty, not cheering for Freya.

But against Algeria, the human statue crumbled. When substitute Adel Boulbina scored his stunning goal from outside the box in the 119th minute, shattering Algerian hopes and ending DR Congo's dream, Mbuladinga was forced, for the first time, to shed his symbolic attire. His outstretched hand, which had so often held a symbolic salute to the leader Lumumba, fell, and he appeared in images circulating on social media in a state of shock and defeat, slowly removing his glasses to wipe away his tears. He ended his tournament journey as he had begun it: in profound silence, but this time the silence of defeat and farewell.

Other images showed him distraught, his hands at his sides, stunned before the cameras.

This scene quickly sparked a wave of reactions, as viewers saw it not merely as an emotional response to a sporting loss, but as a poignant farewell to a national icon who, through his silent presence in the stadium stands, embodied the memory of a nation and an unwavering loyalty to a history that remains alive in the hearts of Congolese people.
