Palace open to Guehi sale if valuation is met – Glasner

Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner has acknowledged the club would be prepared to sell captain Marc Guehi during the January transfer window if their valuation is satisfied.

The England centre-back is entering the final six months of his contract, with Manchester City emerging as serious contenders for his signature. Palace face the risk of losing the 25-year-old on a free transfer in the summer, having already rejected a £35m bid from Liverpool last year.

City’s interest has intensified following defensive injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias sustained during Sunday’s draw with Chelsea, increasing the Premier League champions’ need for reinforcement at the back.

“I’m not naive,” Glasner told The Athletic and The Times. “If a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen.”

Guehi has also attracted significant interest from across Europe, with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid all monitoring his situation ahead of the summer. From this month, the defender is eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club.

Glasner stressed that while the sporting case for retaining Guehi is clear, financial realities cannot be ignored. “If you’re only looking at sporting reasons, everyone at the club will say Marc has to stay — the chairman included,” he said. “But it’s not one-dimensional. Financially, it can become very important.”

“There will be a point where the club has to say the financial issue outweighs the sporting one. There is a threshold, and if it’s crossed — and Marc wants to leave — then it will happen. The final decision always lies with the player.”

Guehi played a central role in Palace’s successful 2023–24 campaign, helping the club finish 12th in the Premier League and lift the FA Cup, securing European qualification for the first time in their history.

That momentum continued into the current season, with Palace winning the Community Shield on penalties against champions Liverpool in August. They currently sit 14th in the league and have progressed to the knockout play-off phase of the Uefa Conference League.

Reflecting on last summer’s decision to retain Guehi, Glasner added: “The chairman rejected several offers because we wanted a successful season and wanted to win the Community Shield. Marc was crucial to that.

“At the time, the offers didn’t go beyond our threshold. Maybe they were close, but they didn’t cross it.”
