Newcastle capitalise on PSV errors to strengthen Champions League last-16 push

Newcastle United moved into a strong position to secure a place in the Champions League last 16 after ruthlessly exploiting defensive errors from PSV Eindhoven in a convincing 3-0 victory at St James’ Park on Wednesday.

Eddie Howe’s side struck twice inside the opening 30 minutes, with Yoane Wissa, making his first Champions League start, and Anthony Gordon both benefiting from costly mistakes by the Dutch champions. Harvey Barnes added a third shortly after the hour mark, continuing his outstanding run of form with his fifth goal in as many matches.

The win, however, came at a cost. Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes was forced off with an ankle injury just before half-time, an absence that could prove significant ahead of next week’s decisive away fixture against Paris Saint-Germain.

Newcastle currently sit inside the top eight on goal difference, a position that would secure direct qualification to the last 16. However, their margin is slim and they are likely to need a result against the holders in Paris to avoid being dragged into the play-off round.

Wissa repaid Howe’s decision to start him ahead of Nick Woltemade by opening the scoring after a poor clearance from PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar. The DR Congo international swept home from Joelinton’s pass, with referee Daniel Siebert upholding the goal following a VAR review, ruling that Wissa had not interfered with play from an earlier offside position.

Despite dominating domestically — PSV hold a commanding 16-point lead at the top of the Eredivisie — Peter Bosz’s side once again undermined themselves on the European stage. Their problems deepened when Yarek Gasiorowski’s underhit backpass gifted Wissa the opportunity to square for Gordon, who rolled the ball into an empty net.

Gordon’s goal took his Champions League tally for the season to six, leaving him behind only Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane in the competition’s scoring charts.

Newcastle’s first-half control was overshadowed by Guimaraes’ injury, sustained in a collision with Kovar while contesting a corner. The Brazilian required extended treatment before being replaced, compounding Howe’s concerns amid an already extensive injury list in midfield and defence during a demanding schedule that sees the club competing on four fronts.

In contrast, Newcastle’s attacking depth continues to deliver. Barnes, revitalised since the turn of the year, exposed a static PSV back line to score his 12th goal of the season with 25 minutes remaining.

The result leaves Newcastle among five Premier League clubs currently occupying places in the top eight, underlining the strength — and financial power — of English sides in Europe’s premier competition. However, their qualification fate will be settled in Paris, where they face another of the continent’s wealthiest clubs in PSG, with the added incentive of potentially denying the holders automatic passage to the knockout stage.
