Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has played down the likelihood of January reinforcements, insisting he does not expect any new signings before the transfer window closes, despite ongoing pressure on his squad—particularly in defence—ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Bournemouth.
Slot acknowledged the challenges of operating in the winter market and indicated the club are prepared to continue with their current group, even after missing out on summer centre-back target Marc Guehi and reported forward target Antoine Semenyo, both of whom have since joined Manchester City.
“I expect to stick with the squad we have,” Slot told reporters on Friday. “But if there is an opportunity, the club will always look at it.”
Liverpool have faced a demanding period, with injuries and absences reducing options at the back, while the attacking unit has also been tested in recent weeks following Alexander Isak’s injury and Mohamed Salah’s involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Salah’s return earlier this week offers a timely boost. The Egypt international boasts an outstanding record against Bournemouth, having scored 12 goals in 12 appearances against the south coast side. Slot confirmed the forward is fit but said a final decision on his involvement would be made after the last training session.
“Knowing Mo, he is ready to play,” Slot said.
Liverpool will, however, remain without defender Ibrahima Konate, who has been granted compassionate leave following the death of his father.
“These are private matters that should stay between us,” Slot added. “It’s very obvious that the player needs time to be there for his family and also time for himself.”
Despite the lack of January additions and limited depth in certain areas, Slot praised his squad’s response to the demands of the campaign. He expressed confidence in Liverpool’s competitiveness as they look to sustain momentum in domestic and European competitions, having extended their unbeaten run to 13 matches in all competitions.
“It’s hard to predict the future,” Slot said. “But we are a very competitive team against any team in the world.”
