Romero’s Late Header Saves Spurs as Burnley Denied Long-Awaited Win

Cristian Romero struck deep into stoppage time to salvage a point for Tottenham Hotspur, sparing head coach Thomas Frank from another humiliating defeat as Spurs drew with struggling Burnley at Turf Moor.

Burnley were seconds away from claiming their first Premier League home victory in 14 matches when Romero rose highest to power in an 89th-minute header, silencing the home crowd and rescuing a result for the visitors.

While Frank had eased pressure with a midweek Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund, the draw did little to quiet doubts surrounding his future.

Spurs controlled much of a scrappy first half and eventually turned pressure into a breakthrough in the 38th minute.

Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka had already produced a remarkable double save from Wilson Odobert and Conor Gallagher, celebrating defiantly, but he could do nothing moments later as Micky van de Ven pounced to smash Spurs ahead.

Tottenham’s advantage lasted only briefly. Defensive lapses in first-half stoppage time allowed Axel Tuanzebe to sweep home Kyle Walker’s cross, giving Burnley a lifeline and shifting the momentum.

After the break, Dúbravka continued his outstanding performance, denying Dominic Solanke and Djed Spence with acrobatic stops.

Burnley then shocked Spurs by taking the lead with 14 minutes remaining, substitute Lyle Foster reacting quickest to finish after his initial attempt was saved by Guglielmo Vicario.

Spurs launched a late assault in search of an equaliser.

Dúbravka produced further heroics to deny Mathys Tel, while Xavi Simons struck the crossbar, before Romero’s towering header finally broke Burnley’s resistance.

Burnley view: Opportunity slips away

Scott Parker’s side showed greater urgency after the interval and came agonisingly close to a rare victory that would have boosted their survival hopes.

Foster’s goal appeared to secure three precious points, but Burnley could not withstand Spurs’ late pressure.

Despite their defensive resilience and Dúbravka’s exceptional display, Romero’s late intervention left the hosts with a sense of a missed opportunity.

Spurs view: Pressure mounts on Frank

For Tottenham, the result offered little comfort.

Angry chants from the travelling supporters underscored growing frustration with Frank, whose team once again failed to turn dominance into victory.

With just two wins in their last 14 league matches, Spurs’ struggles continue, and even a dramatic late equaliser did little to mask deeper concerns about their form and direction.
