Diarra Penalty Sends Sunderland Past Oxford into FA Cup Fifth Round

Sunderland progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a hard-earned victory over Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.

The decisive moment came in the 32nd minute when referee Thomas Kirk awarded Sunderland a penalty after Christ Makosso was adjudged to have fouled Dennis Cirkin.

Habib Diarra calmly converted from the spot to score what proved to be the only goal of the game.

Oxford, battling near the foot of the Championship under head coach Matt Bloomfield, made eight changes but produced a spirited display.

New signing Jin-Woo Jeon looked lively in the early stages, while Tottenham loanee Jamie Donleyforced a strong save from Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs.

Despite Oxford’s bright start, Sunderland gradually asserted control.

In the second half, stand-in goalkeeper Matt Ingramkept the hosts in contention with an impressive series of saves, denying Romaine Mundle, Chemsidine Talbi and Trai Hume.

Sunderland, managed by Regis Le Bris, were rarely troubled defensively and could have extended their lead but for Ingram’s heroics.

Ultimately, the Premier League side’s quality told as they took another step towards Wembley.

For Oxford, defeat offered a brief respite from their relegation concerns.

Though they remain locked in a battle for survival, the performance - warmly applauded by their supporters at full-time - provided encouragement despite the narrow loss.
