Michael Carrick praises Man Utd ‘diversity’ after Jim Ratcliffe controversy

Michael Carrick has reaffirmed Manchester United’s commitment to diversity and inclusion following controversial remarks made by co-owner Jim Ratcliffe about immigration in the United Kingdom.

Ratcliffe faced widespread criticism after claiming the UK had been “colonised by immigrants,” comments for which he later apologised, stating he regretted any offence caused. The episode prompted public statements from both Ratcliffe and the club.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the incident, interim manager Carrick adopted a measured tone, declining to directly expand on Ratcliffe’s remarks while emphasising United’s longstanding global identity and inclusive culture.

Carrick stressed that Manchester United’s international reach brings with it significant social responsibility. Drawing on his extensive association with the club—as a player for 12 years and now in his second spell as interim manager following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January—he highlighted equality, diversity and mutual respect as core principles embedded within the institution.

Having worked under multiple managers and alongside staff and players from varied cultural and ethnic backgrounds, Carrick said his experience reflects a club environment built on inclusivity. He described himself as proud of the standards and values United seeks to uphold, particularly given its global footprint.

Squad unity unaffected

Carrick also dismissed suggestions that the controversy could disrupt the dressing room. Ahead of Monday’s Premier League fixture against Everton, he portrayed a united and focused squad.

According to Carrick, internal communication remains strong, with players and staff continuing to support one another. He reported positive morale within the group, indicating that preparations for the upcoming match have proceeded without distraction.

In reinforcing United’s cultural framework rather than engaging in political debate, Carrick positioned the club’s identity—and its multinational squad—as evidence of its enduring commitment to inclusivity, even amid external controversy.
