Guessand’s Late Strike Gives Crystal Palace Narrow Win Over 10-Man Wolves

Guessand’s Late Strike Gives Crystal Palace Narrow Win Over 10-Man Wolves

Evann Guessand scored in the 90th minute as Crystal Palace edged past 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers to secure their first home victory since early November.

Palace have struggled for form since manager Oliver Glasner announced he will leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

Discontent among supporters has grown in recent weeks, with some even calling for his immediate departure during the midweek Europa Conference League draw in Mostar.

Despite Glasner insisting he will see out the season, Palace delivered another underwhelming performance at Selhurst Park before substitute Guessand rescued them late on.

Bottom-of-the-table Wolves had the better chances in the first half and squandered a golden opportunity to lead when Tolu Arokodare’s tame penalty was saved by Dean Henderson. It proved a pivotal moment.

The game shifted just after the hour mark when Ladislav Krejci was sent off, receiving two yellow cards in the space of four minutes.

Even with the numerical advantage, Palace struggled to assert themselves.

Their breakthrough finally arrived in stoppage time.

Tyrick Mitchell’s low cross found Guessand, who turned home at the near post for his first goal since joining on loan from Aston Villa in January.

The late winner eased immediate relegation fears and briefly quietened growing frustration among sections of the home support.

Palace Analysis: Lingering Doubts Remain

Recent £48m signing Jørgen Strand Larsen faced his former club but endured a frustrating afternoon, receiving little service.

His only effort of note was a blocked shot in the first half.

Palace’s best early opportunities came from Wolves’ mistakes and set pieces.

Yerson Mosquera’s underhit backpass allowed Yeremy Pino a sight of goal, but his lob drifted wide. Later, a well-worked corner routine ended with Pino striking the post.

Henderson proved crucial once again, saving Arokodare’s penalty - his fifth stop from 15 Premier League spot-kicks faced.

Even after Krejci’s dismissal for dissent, Palace lacked the intensity that characterised their run to FA Cup success last season.

Guessand’s late intervention delivered only their second win since early December, but the performance did little to convince sceptical fans that Glasner is the right man to steady the ship before his departure.

Wolves Analysis: Encouraging Signs Despite Defeat

While the result was harsh, Wolves manager Rob Edwards will draw positives from his side’s display.

Before the red card, the visitors were the more threatening team, pressing high and spending extended periods in Palace’s half.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde forced Henderson into a sharp save, and Wolves earned their penalty after a flowing move initiated by Mosquera.

However, Arokodare’s poor conversion - his fifth consecutive missed penalty dating back to 2022 - proved costly.

The visitors registered five shots on target in the first half, their highest tally before the break in a league game since April.

Krejci’s sending-off altered the balance, forcing Wolves deeper, yet they still threatened during nine minutes of added time.

Palace’s late goal denied Wolves a point that would have moved them closer to avoiding unwanted records.

Still, after three matches unbeaten prior to this defeat, there are signs Edwards’ side may yet gather enough momentum to steer clear of further embarrassment in a difficult campaign.
