Wolves and Sunderland Condemn Racist Abuse Targeting Players

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sunderland have strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at their players on social media following Premier League defeats on Sunday, highlighting the persistent issue of discrimination within the game.

Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare and Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle were both subjected to online abuse after their respective matches. The incidents occurred less than 24 hours after similar racist messages were aimed at Wesley Fofana and Hannibal Mejbri in the aftermath of Chelsea’s draw with Burnley, underlining a troubling pattern across the league.

Wolves expressed their “disgust” at the multiple instances of abuse aimed at Arokodare following their narrow 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. In a statement, the club reaffirmed its support for the player and condemned the apparent impunity with which anonymous accounts continue to target footballers.

Sunderland, who were beaten 3-1 by Fulham, confirmed they are working alongside the relevant authorities to identify those responsible for the messages directed at Mundle. The club described the conduct as “abhorrent” and made clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The latest incidents add to mounting concerns about the effectiveness of measures designed to combat online abuse, with clubs increasingly calling for stronger accountability and enforcement to protect players from discrimination in digital spaces.
