Walsall dismiss Sadler after slump continues with Salford defeat

Walsall have parted ways with head coach Mat Sadler following Tuesday’s 1–0 defeat to Salford City, a result that extended the club’s poor run of form in League Two and significantly weakened their push for a play-off place.

The loss marked Walsall’s third consecutive defeat and left them with just one win in their past 11 league matches, prompting the club’s board to make a managerial change with 10 games remaining in the season.

Earlier in the campaign, Walsall appeared well placed for promotion, sitting four points clear at the top of the table in early December. However, a dramatic downturn in results—two victories in 14 matches since Boxing Day—has seen them slide to 11th place, three points outside the play-off positions.

Sadler, a former Walsall defender, departs after nearly three years at the helm. He initially stepped into the role on an interim basis before being appointed permanently in May 2023.

Walsall co-chairman Ben Boycott thanked Sadler for his service during his time with the club.

“I would like to acknowledge the significant efforts and contributions of Mat, both as a professional and as a person, during his time at the club,” Boycott said in a statement.

“We thank him for his dedicated service and wish him the very best for the future.”

Interim management team appointed

The club confirmed that coach Darren Byfield will take charge of the team on an interim basis. He will be supported by assistant Terry Connor and the rest of the existing backroom staff as Walsall look to stabilise their campaign during the final stretch of the season.

Form collapse behind decision

Walsall’s decline has been particularly evident in recent months, with performances failing to match the standards set earlier in the season.

Supporters have voiced growing frustration, especially over the team’s struggles at home. The club has scored just 19 goals in 18 home matches this season and suffered eight defeats at the Bescot Stadium, including their last four.

Since a league-topping victory over Crewe Alexandra on 26 December, Walsall have managed just two wins, leaving their promotion ambitions under serious threat.

Fan dissatisfaction became more visible following a home defeat to Barnet last month, when sections of supporters called for Sadler’s dismissal both during and after the match.

Tensions between fans and management

In response to the criticism at the time, Sadler suggested that a culture of instant gratification among supporters had contributed to the discontent surrounding the team’s performances.

Shortly afterward, Walsall’s board issued a statement acknowledging that results had not met the club’s expectations—an indication that the manager’s position was coming under increasing scrutiny.

Sadler maintained publicly that speculation about his future was not his concern, stating it was “not my job” to focus on potential consequences for his role.

Although Walsall briefly showed signs of recovery with an impressive away victory at in-form Shrewsbury Town, the team’s inability to secure results at home ultimately proved decisive.

Tuesday’s defeat to Salford, which extended their winless home run to six matches, brought an end to Sadler’s tenure as the club looks to revive its play-off hopes in the final weeks of the season.
