Real Madrid dominate Manchester City as PSG overpower Chelsea in Champions League

Real Madrid delivered a commanding performance to defeat Manchester City 3–0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday, while reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain secured an emphatic 5–2 victory over Chelsea.

Elsewhere, Arsenal preserved their unbeaten European record this season with a late 1–1 draw away to Bayer Leverkusen, while Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt continued their remarkable campaign with a 3–0 win against Sporting CP.

Valverde inspires Real Madrid rout

Under the guidance of head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, record 15-time European champions Real Madrid produced a dominant display at the Santiago Bernabéu to seize control of their tie with Manchester City.

The standout performer was Federico Valverde, who scored a stunning first-half hat-trick to avenge Madrid’s earlier defeat to City during the competition’s league phase. His clinical finishing ensured the Spanish giants maintained firm control despite the absence of injured forward Kylian Mbappe.

Valverde opened the scoring after racing onto a long clearance from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, calmly rounding City’s keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma before finishing into an empty net.

The Uruguayan midfielder doubled Madrid’s advantage shortly afterwards with a precise low strike into the far corner, before completing his hat-trick with a composed finish following an intricate attacking move involving Brahim Diaz.

Manchester City were fortunate not to concede further after the interval. Donnarumma redeemed himself by saving a penalty from Vinicius Junior after the goalkeeper had fouled the Brazilian forward inside the area.

PSG take control against Chelsea

In Paris, PSG moved firmly toward the quarter-finals after a high-scoring encounter with Chelsea at the Parc des Princes.

Bradley Barcola opened the scoring for the French champions, but Chelsea responded when Malo Gusto produced a scrappy finish that slipped past goalkeeper Matvei Safonov.

PSG quickly regained the initiative through Ousmane Dembele, who completed a swift counterattack to restore the hosts’ lead before halftime.

Chelsea again fought back when Enzo Fernandez finished a move created by the pace and creativity of Pedro Neto.

However, defensive mistakes ultimately proved costly for the Premier League side. A misplaced pass from goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen allowed Vitinha to lob the ball into an empty net to put PSG ahead once more.

From that point, the hosts asserted their dominance. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored twice late on — first with a powerful strike and then again in stoppage time — to give the defending champions a commanding advantage heading into the second leg.

Arsenal rescue draw in Germany

Despite an unprecedented six English clubs reaching the last 16 of this season’s Champions League, none managed to record a victory in midweek action, with only two avoiding defeat.

Arsenal were forced to settle for a draw after a difficult night against Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.

Leverkusen took the lead shortly after the restart when midfielder Robert Andrich headed home from a corner, putting the hosts on course for a valuable first-leg victory.

However, Arsenal salvaged the tie late on when substitute Kai Havertz converted an 89th-minute penalty against his former club after Noni Madueke was fouled in the box.

Havertz acknowledged that Arsenal had not produced their best performance but remained confident about the return leg.

“I know how difficult it is to come here and we expected a tough match,” he said. “We didn’t play our best football, but we’re going home with a good result. Next week we need to raise our level.”

Bodo/Glimt continue their European fairytale

One of the most remarkable stories of the tournament continues to unfold in Norway, where Bodo/Glimt recorded their fifth consecutive Champions League victory by comfortably defeating Sporting 3–0.

Sondre Brunstad Fet opened the scoring from the penalty spot just after the half-hour mark before Ole Didrik Blomberg doubled the lead during first-half stoppage time.

The result was sealed in the closing stages when striker Kasper Hogh netted his fifth goal in as many European appearances, triggering jubilant celebrations among the Norwegian side and their supporters.

With momentum firmly on their side, Bodo/Glimt’s unlikely Champions League journey shows no signs of slowing as they edge closer to what would be a historic quarter-final appearance.
