Nine-Man Bayern Hold Leverkusen as Diaz Scores and Sees Red

Bayern Munich battled to a dramatic draw against Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena despite finishing the match with just nine players.

Leverkusen made a strong start and took the lead after six minutes when Aleix Garcia fired a powerful shot past goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, with the effort deflecting off former Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah on its way into the net.

Bayern thought they had equalised midway through the first half when Tah headed home, but the goal was ruled out for handball.

Things soon worsened for the visitors when Nicolas Jackson, who had been selected ahead of returning striker Harry Kane, was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Martin Terrier.

Kane was introduced shortly after the half-hour mark, but it was Luis Díaz who brought Bayern level in the 38th minute.

The Colombian forward collected a precise pass from Michael Olise before calmly finishing past Leverkusen goalkeeper Janis Blaswich.

Diaz dismissed as Bayern reduced to nine

The match took another dramatic turn late on when Diaz received a second yellow card after being judged to have dived while attempting to go past Blaswich in the penalty area following a through ball from Kane.

The decision left Bayern with nine players for the final minutes of the match.

Leverkusen pushed forward in search of a winner and thought they had found it deep into stoppage time.

Jonas Hofmannchipped Ulreich with a delicate finish, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a pass from Exequiel Palacios.

Moments later, Christian Kofane also had a goal disallowed after officials ruled that Ibrahim Maza had fouled Ulreich while the goalkeeper had both hands on the ball.

Title race and European battles continue

The result leaves Bayern comfortably ahead in the Bundesliga title race.

Borussia Dortmund moved closer with a 2–0 victory over FC Augsburg but still sit nine points behind Bayern with eight matches remaining.

Leverkusen, currently sixth, missed the chance to move into the top four ahead of a key clash between VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig.

Both teams now turn their attention to European competition.

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany will look to guide his side into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League when they host Atalanta BC, having already secured a commanding 6–1 advantage from the first leg.

Leverkusen, meanwhile, travel to face Arsenal after drawing the opening leg of their Champions League tie 1–1.
