Manchester United Stand Firm on Casemiro Departure Decision

Manchester United have no intention of reversing their decision to allow veteran midfielder Casemiro to leave the club at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old Brazilian confirmed in January that he would depart Old Trafford once his £350,000-a-week contract expires this summer. Despite delivering a series of strong performances in recent months, the club have decided not to offer the former Real Madrid midfielder a new deal, meaning he will become available on a free transfer.

The decision is understood to align with the cost-cutting strategy led by United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe. Ratcliffe had previously expressed surprise at Casemiro’s reported £18.2 million annual salary and has pledged to reduce the club’s wage bill as part of a wider financial restructuring.

As a result, the club opted not to activate the option to extend Casemiro’s contract, preferring to make the decision early as they continue a long-term squad rebuild.

Casemiro himself requested that the situation be made public well before the end of the campaign to avoid uncertainty surrounding his future during the final stages of the season.

Strong form sparks fan support

Since the announcement, however, the midfielder has produced a number of influential displays that have reignited debate over whether the club should reconsider.

Casemiro scored the opening goal in United’s recent victory against Aston Villa, taking his tally for the season to seven goals — six of which have come from headers.

The Brazilian celebrated the goal in front of the Stretford End, repeatedly pointing to the club badge on his shirt in an emotional moment with supporters.

Fans responded by chanting “One more year, Casemiro,” both during the match and again at full time as the midfielder made his way toward the tunnel.

Support for Casemiro has also emerged within the squad. United captain Bruno Fernandes and defender Leny Yoro both publicly expressed hope that the experienced midfielder could remain at the club.

Club maintaining long-term strategy

Despite the growing backing from fans and teammates, sources indicate that Manchester United have no plans to reconsider their stance.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick has also suggested the decision will stand, stressing the importance of clarity within the squad.

“When something is decided it makes it a little bit easier and everyone understands the situation,” Carrick said.

“The impact he’s had has been terrific, both through his influence within the team and in delivering big moments and important goals.”

Carrick also acknowledged the connection between Casemiro and the supporters, referencing the post-match scenes at Old Trafford.

“There was a nice moment at the end with the supporters. He’ll enjoy that one.”

While Casemiro’s recent form has strengthened his case among fans, United appear committed to their longer-term restructuring plans as they reshape the squad ahead of next season.
