UEFA has issued multiple sanctions against Benfica following supporter misconduct during their recent Champions League fixture against Real Madrid.
The Portuguese side have been fined €40,000 for what UEFA described as “racist and/or discriminatory behaviour” among sections of their fanbase during the match in Lisbon. Additional disciplinary measures include a €25,000 fine for objects thrown onto the pitch and €8,000 for the use of a laser pointer.
The first leg, played on 17 February, saw Real Madrid secure a 1-0 victory, but the fixture was marred by controversy involving Vinicius Jr.
The Real Madrid forward alleged that Gianluca Prestianni directed a racist remark towards him during the match — a claim strongly denied by both the player and Benfica.
UEFA subsequently launched an investigation into the incident and provisionally suspended Prestianni for the return leg in Madrid.
Real Madrid went on to win the second leg 2-1, completing a 3-1 aggregate victory to progress in the competition.
Beyond financial penalties, UEFA has also imposed a suspended sanction requiring the partial closure of Benfica’s stadium for a future home match. This measure will remain inactive for a one-year probationary period, contingent on further compliance.
In addition, Benfica assistant coach Pedro Machado has been handed a one-match suspension for unsporting conduct.
