Emmanuel Longelo struck a dramatic 90th-minute winner as Motherwell produced a stunning display to beat Rangers 3-2 at Ibrox and deal a major blow to the hosts’ title ambitions.
The visitors raced into a two-goal lead inside 25 minutes through Lukas Fadinger and Longelo, leaving Rangers with a mountain to climb for the second game in a row.
This time, however, there would be no escape.
Rangers fought back strongly after the break, with Youssef Chermiti curling in before Nico Raskin levelled to spark hopes of a comeback.
But just as the home side pushed for a winner, Motherwell struck decisively on the counter, with Longelo’s effort taking a deflection past Jack Butland to seal a famous victory.
The defeat leaves Rangers unable to overtake Celtic and still trailing leaders Hearts in a tightly contested title race.
Motherwell were outstanding in the first half, playing with confidence and attacking intent.
Fadinger opened the scoring after a slick passing move, before Longelo doubled the lead with a composed first-time finish from Tom Sparrow’s cross.
Rangers, unusually flat at home, struggled to respond and were second best throughout the opening period.
A triple substitution at half-time transformed Rangers, injecting urgency and energy into their play.
Chermiti’s strike gave them hope, and Raskin’s equaliser brought the crowd to life.
Momentum was firmly with the hosts, but they failed to find a third goal - and were punished for it.
Motherwell’s victory ends a poor run of form in emphatic style and strengthens their push for European football, while raising fresh questions about Rangers’ consistency at a crucial stage of the season.
For Rangers, falling two goals behind again proved costly.
Despite their spirited fightback, conceding late at home could have serious implications in an increasingly unpredictable title race.
Rangers head coach Danny Rohl: "It's tough when you are 2-0 down. You have to fight and you have to do a lot of things right and we did until we conceded the goal.
"Second half, we played a good game, then created a lot of chances. Finally, it was unlucky, we conceded one more goal and then it's tough to come back.
"I've been complimenting my players about the reaction, how much courage we put in, quality, intensity and it was good to see. Today, it's a little bit tough to take but we keep believing and this is the most important thing - four more finals."
Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou: "The result, it's hard not to say that's very pleasing. First half was right up there with us at the very best.
"Second half became a much more difficult half, both because Rangers stepped up and lifted their game and because we didn't have that same sharpness in our game.
"To stay cool and to still play our game when you have more than 50,000 try to help push for the winner - really impressed with that."
