Manchester United’s next generation is making serious noise — and this summer’s pre-season could be their biggest opportunity yet to break into the first team.
With United’s under-21s and under-18s both competing for silverware, the club’s brightest young prospects are positioning themselves for a crucial step up ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Adam Lawrence’s under-21 side secured a Premier League 2 play-off quarter-final clash with Crystal Palace after defeating Sunderland, while Darren Fletcher’s under-18s are chasing FA Youth Cup glory against Manchester City.
United kick off their pre-season schedule against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July, just a day before the World Cup final — meaning several senior players are likely to be unavailable due to mandatory rest periods.
That opens the door for academy players to feature prominently, potentially including another fixture against Rosenborg on 24 July.
“With the World Cup factor, there could be even more opportunities,” said Lawrence. “It’s about whether players can take them and make an impression.”
Here are the Manchester United youngsters pushing for a first-team breakthrough:
Shea Lacey (19) Already on the fringes of the senior squad, Lacey has made three substitute appearances and featured on the bench 11 times. The England Under-20 winger is widely expected to become a permanent first-team option.
JJ Gabriel (15) A standout in the under-18s, Gabriel is the team’s top scorer in the league. His pace and technical ability have caught attention, and he has already trained with the senior squad despite his young age.
Radek Vitek (22) After an impressive loan spell at Bristol City, the goalkeeper is eager for regular football. With first-choice options likely absent due to international duty, Vitek could get valuable pre-season minutes.
Chido Obi (Denmark U21) The striker made eight senior appearances last season and continues to develop through youth competitions. Pre-season could determine whether he stays or heads out on loan.
Harry Amass (19) The left-back impressed during his loan spell before a hamstring injury cut it short. Now fully fit, he’s expected to feature heavily in pre-season.
Tyler Fletcher (19) A composed holding midfielder and son of Darren Fletcher, Tyler has already made his senior debut and looks well-placed to push for more involvement.
Jack Fletcher (19) Twin brother to Tyler, Jack has shown attacking quality and creativity, including a recent goal against Sunderland. He remains firmly in the club’s long-term plans.
Jim Thwaites (18) An intelligent midfielder with strong set-piece ability, Thwaites has drawn comparisons to David Beckham and has already trained extensively with the first team.
Godwill Kukonki (18) A physically imposing defender capable of playing centrally or at left-back. He has yet to make his senior debut but is closing in.
Bendito Mantato (18) Despite injury setbacks, Mantato has already made his senior debut and offers versatility on the right flank.
Noah Ajayi (17) A dynamic attacking talent, Ajayi has impressed with his pace and finishing, including a standout goal in the FA Youth Cup.
With multiple senior players expected to miss pre-season, Manchester United’s academy prospects have a rare chance to impress on a big stage.
As history has shown — from Mason Greenwood to James Garner — pre-season can be the launchpad for a breakthrough.
This summer, the spotlight is firmly on United’s next generation.
