Celtic Edge Past 10-Man Hibs to Stay Level at the Summit

Celtic battled to a hard-fought win over 10-man Hibernian to move level on points with Hearts at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Hibs were reduced to 10 men early on when Jamie McGrath was sent off for a reckless challenge on Alistair Johnston, their fourth red card in three games.

Despite the setback, the hosts pushed Celtic all the way in a tense encounter.

The visitors looked set to take control when Daizen Maeda continued his fine form, scoring his fourth goal in three matches after finishing from close range following a VAR review.

However, Hibs responded just before half-time in controversial fashion.

Joe Newell bundled the ball home after a goalmouth scramble, with Celtic protesting for handball, but the goal stood.

Celtic Struggle to Break Resistance

Despite their numerical advantage, Celtic found it difficult to create clear chances after the break as Hibs defended resolutely and looked for opportunities on the counter.

The breakthrough eventually came from substitute Kelechi Iheanacho, who showed composure to control a corner and finish from close range to restore Celtic’s lead.

Hibs nearly snatched a dramatic equaliser late on, but Ante Suto fired into the side netting, allowing Celtic to hold on.

Title Race Intensifies

The win keeps Celtic level with Hearts, trailing only on goal difference, while Rangers remain in the mix just behind.

For Hibs, the defeat dents their hopes of European qualification, leaving them struggling for consistency after a difficult run of results.

Momentum with Celtic

Celtic’s ability to grind out results at this stage of the season could prove decisive.

Maeda’s scoring run and Iheanacho’s impact off the bench highlight a side finding form at the right time.

As the title race tightens, results like this - even when not convincing - could make all the difference.

What they said:

Hibernian head coach David Gray: "It is a case of deja vu going down to 10 men. I thought Celtic started fast, as we expected, but then you find yourself down to 10 men and it makes it extremely difficult.

"It is a definite red card. I think the most important thing is to stay in the game and we have done that - and then take the opportunities when they come.

"They put the bodies on the line to give us the chance to have a go in the last 10 minutes and we had one big chance and didn't take it."

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill: "A man sent off for Hibs, they had a couple sent off last week, and you think 11 v 10, we should be reasonably comfortable.

"We lost a very poor goal from our viewpoint just before half time and it changes the complexion of the game - Hibs having something to hold on to and defend very strongly, as they did last week with nine men.

"Of course there was an anxiety before the goal, but we got there. What do I want for tomorrow [when Hearts face Rangers]? I genuinely don't know. We've won today, so there's a bit of relief for 24 hours."
