Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha believes interim manager Michael Carrick has rediscovered the “magic” of the Sir Alex Ferguson era, following a dramatic turnaround that secured Champions League football.
Cunha opened the scoring in United’s thrilling 3-2 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford, a result that confirmed a top-four finish with three games to spare—an outcome few predicted earlier this season.
Since taking charge after Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January, Carrick has overseen an impressive run:
The 44-year-old, a former key figure under Ferguson, is now the leading candidate for the permanent role.
Cunha believes Carrick’s connection to United’s golden era has been vital.
“He has the magic from the Ferguson times,” Cunha said. “He brings that feeling to us, teaches us what it means to be part of this club. It’s amazing—he deserves it.”
Despite sealing Champions League qualification, Carrick has urged his squad to remain focused.
United still need four more points to guarantee a top-three finish—something achieved only four times since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. They also have the chance to finish closer to the title winners than in any post-Ferguson season.
Cunha insists the club must now aim higher.
“The Champions League without this club is not the same,” he said. “But it’s not enough—we need to fight for titles. This is just the first step.”
The Brazilian has justified his £62.5m move from Wolves, becoming a key figure in United’s resurgence:
His performances have also brought flair, including his signature “surfing” celebration—perfected after advice from friends back home.
“I’ve improved it a bit,” Cunha joked. “Now I paddle, stand up—it’s part of my life and shows how happy I am.”
While United prepare for a busy summer, uncertainty surrounds Casemiro’s future.
The 34-year-old has hinted at a departure, a view echoed by Carrick, but Cunha is not convinced.
“He’s so important—on and off the pitch,” Cunha said. “We don’t know what will happen. Everyone hopes there’s a little bit more.”
With Carrick blending past success with present ambition, United’s resurgence is gathering momentum. Champions League football is secured—but the message from inside Old Trafford is clear: this is only the beginning.
