Real Madrid have been dealt another injury concern after Ferland Mendy sustained a new muscular issue, raising fears the defender could face an extended spell on the sidelines once again.
The French left-back, who only returned in November following surgery on the same leg, has been diagnosed with a tendon injury in the rectus femoris of his right thigh, the club confirmed on Monday.
Mendy was forced off early during Sunday’s 2–0 victory over Espanyol, leaving the pitch in visible discomfort after just 14 minutes—an all-too-familiar sight for a player who has struggled with recurring fitness issues since joining Los Blancos in 2019.
The 29-year-old has endured a frustrating campaign, making just nine appearances this season. His latest setback comes less than a year after undergoing surgery in April, further compounding his injury troubles.
In an official statement, Real Madrid said:
“Following tests carried out today on our player Ferland Mendy by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a tendon injury in the rectus femoris of his right leg.”
Mendy now faces a race against time to feature again this season, with the injury likely to sideline him for the remainder of the campaign.
If confirmed, he would join a growing list of absentees including Éder Militão, Arda Güler, and Rodrygo—players also expected to miss the final stretch, including this weekend’s highly anticipated El Clásico clash against Barcelona.
Mendy’s ongoing fitness struggles have also impacted his international career. He has not featured for France since 2024 and was not expected to be included in Didier Deschamps’ squad for this year’s World Cup.
For Real Madrid, the latest setback is another defensive blow at a critical stage of the season, as they continue to battle on multiple fronts without key personnel.
