Serie A Top-Four Race Descends Into Chaos Amid Rome Derby Scheduling Dispute

The race for Champions League qualification in Serie A has taken a dramatic twist, with fixture scheduling chaos threatening to overshadow one of the most intense finishes to an Italian season in recent years.

With just two rounds remaining, five clubs are battling for three available Champions League spots, but uncertainty surrounding kickoff times — particularly the Rome derby between AS Roma and Lazio — has created confusion across the league.

Serie A regulations require teams competing for the same objective to play simultaneously during the final two matchdays. League organisers initially scheduled all five decisive fixtures for Sunday at 12:30 CET.

However, concerns over public safety quickly disrupted those plans.

The Italian Tennis Open men’s final is also set to take place on Sunday at the Foro Italico, located next to the Stadio Olimpico, prompting authorities to fear major logistical and security issues in Rome.

As a result, Rome’s Prefect ordered the Roma-Lazio clash to be moved to Monday night, directly contradicting Serie A’s original schedule.

Lega Serie A has since appealed the decision to the Regional Administrative Court of Lazio, with a verdict expected by Thursday or Friday.

Serie A Top-Four Battle Intensifies

The Champions League race remains incredibly tight heading into the penultimate weekend.

Only reigning champions Inter Milan have officially secured qualification for Europe’s elite competition next season.

Napoli currently sit second on 70 points, two ahead of Juventus, while AC Milan and Roma trail by just one more point. Como, on 65 points, have already guaranteed European football for the first time in their history but still retain slim hopes of a top-four finish.

Despite being favourites to qualify, Napoli are stumbling toward the finish line. Antonio Conte’s side suffered a damaging 3-2 home defeat against Bologna on Monday and have managed just one win in their last five league matches.

A victory away at already-relegated Pisa would guarantee Napoli a Champions League place.

AC Milan are also struggling at a crucial stage of the season. The Rossoneri have won only once in their last six matches and were beaten 3-2 at home by Atalanta in their previous outing. They now face a difficult trip to Genoa.

Juventus, meanwhile, are unbeaten in 10 league matches and will be expected to claim maximum points at home against Fiorentina.

Roma’s showdown with Lazio could prove decisive in the race, although Lazio enter the derby still recovering from their Coppa Italia final defeat to Inter Milan.

Football and Tennis Clash in Rome

The scheduling controversy has highlighted growing tensions between two of Italy’s biggest sporting events.

Wednesday’s celebrations at the Stadio Olimpico after the Coppa Italia final already caused disruption at the nearby Italian Tennis Open, with fireworks and smoke temporarily halting play and affecting the tournament’s electronic line-calling system.

Now, football and tennis are set for another collision in the Italian capital.

The uncertainty has also impacted team preparations, with clubs still awaiting confirmation over when key fixtures will be played.

Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri made his frustrations clear following the Coppa Italia final defeat.

“If it’s on Monday, I’ll come. On Sunday at 12:30, I won’t,” Sarri said.

“The Prefect has been clear, so let’s hope that’s the date. If I were the club president, I wouldn’t even send the team out.”

Relegation Battle Also Goes Down to the Wire

While the Champions League race dominates headlines, the fight to avoid relegation is equally tense.

Cremonese sit third from bottom on 31 points and travel to Udinese this weekend.

Lecce, one point above the drop zone, face Sassuolo away from home, while Cagliari — currently on 37 points — need only a draw against Torino to secure Serie A survival.
